The aim of the GDZ is to capture as many historical sources as possible - including archival records, prints, manuscripts, maps, estates and other holdings - electronically and make them freely available to the public worldwide.
Tasks and Projects
The GDZ undertakes the digitization of historical and scientifically relevant sources to enable fast, uncomplicated and permanent access to knowledge resources - regardless of time and place.
Use and Significance
With more than 14 million digitized pages, the GDZ offers an extensive collection for research, teaching and study worldwide in its digital presentation.
The digitized materials are made available to the scientific and general public and are also integrated into national and international portals such as the "German Digital Library" and "Europeana".
Technical Equipment
The GDZ has various digitization processes at its disposal in order to be able to digitize the historical materials, some of which are demanding in terms of conservation, in a way that is gentle on the holdings.
In summary, the Göttingen Digitization Centre is an institution for the digital provision and accessibility of unique holdings of one of the most important scientific libraries in Germany.
The focus is primarily on the extensive historical holdings of the SUB Göttingen as well as on advising on digitization measures on the Göttingen campus and in the university's numerous important collections.
In addition, the GDZ serves the requirements of various specialized information services (FID) and offers the service of the Georg-August University to support students with impaired vision.
