Art history
You will find holdings on art history mainly in the seminar library and in the central library. On this page you will find further subject-specific information (services, literature research, etc.).
Catalogues
In the discovery system GöDiscovery you can find books, journals, databases and a large number of articles from journals - both from the holdings of the SUB Göttingen and the institute libraries as well as from external sources. By default, the local holdings are searched; the search area can be expanded via the settings.
In the Göttingen University Catalogue (GUK) you will only find the local holdings.
The library of the Seminar of Art History has its own catalogue.
Books: print and digital
Printed books, e-books, articles, etc.
In GöDiscovery and in the GUK you will find various types of publications (e-books, printed books, exhibition catalogs) on art and art history. You can filter by publication type.
Locations
Some of the holdings are freely accessible in the reading room of the Central Library. However, a large part is located in closed stacks and can be ordered via GöDiscovery or GUK. The literature in the reading room is arranged systematically in the classes "GA" to "GK".
Book not available?
If you cannot find a title, you can order the book via interlibrary loan or send us a Purchase suggestion for an e-book or a print title.
Journals
Journals on art history are available both digitally and in print. The most important journals on art history are located in Reading Room 2 (LS2) on the 2nd floor of the SUB Göttingen. Journals on art history can be found under the notations GA - GH in the 2nd "finger" of the library building. The journals in reading room 2 cannot be borrowed, but they can be copied.
You can find digital and print editions in GöDiscovery and in the Göttingen University Catalogue (GUK). The Electronic Journals Library (EZB) offers an overview sorted by subject and uses color symbols to indicate access to the full text. Many licensed titles can also be used off campus via VPN.
Databases and research data
Databases can be found in the Database Information System (DBIS), organized by subject. The licensed fee-based databases can also be found in GöDiscovery and in the Göttingen University Catalogue (GUK). The free databases can only be found in DBIS. Data resources of various types are listed, in particular subject bibliographies that list articles, as well as full-text databases that contain articles from electronic journals.
Image databases
Image databases play a special role in art history. Here are some options:
- GöPix: The image material in the Art History Department's database has been continuously expanded since 2013. The holdings are largely geared towards the interests of current courses. Lecturers and students can commission images from the image archive staff. These files are then entered into the GöPix image database.
- Prometheus Image Archive: The distributed digital image archive Prometheus brings together art historical image material from various institutions via a web portal.
- Artstor: The Artstor image database contains image material from the fields of art, architecture, humanities and social sciences, particularly from Europe, Asia and America. Artstor's extensive public collections are accessible free of charge.
- Deutsche Fotothek The image database of the Deutsche Fotothek provides access to a wide range of image documents, including a comprehensive collection of works by German photographers.
- Bildindex der Kunst und Architektur: The Bildindex der Kunst und Architektur contains, among other things, photographs of German and European works of art and architecture and is operated by the German Documentation Center for Art History - Bildarchiv Foto Marburg.
- HeidICON: The Heidelberg University Library's image database contains, among other things, book illumination images from the Heidelberg Bibliotheca Palatina, images from the Graphic Art Collection of Heidelberg University Library and caricatures from European satirical magazines.
Publication of research data
Digital data is becoming increasingly common in humanities work, for example in word processing, literature management, the digitization of graphics or objects, the creation of image databases or the implementation of didactic surveys. You will find various offers and services on the SUB Göttingen website. If you have any questions, please contact the subject librarian.
Complex literature search in the catalogue
The SUB Göttingen describes the titles (e. g. books) by several entries (metadata), which you can use in the catalogue to find suitable literature for your topic. Some examples of information in the catalogue are title, publisher, author, language of publication, subject (described by library classification systems such as the Basic Classification or the Göttingen Online Classification), publication type, etc. Here are some searches with the basic classification that are possible in both the GUK (local catalog) and the GVK (supra-regional catalogue):
- Art history titles: bkl 2[01].?
- Art history titles licensed as e-books: bkl 2[01].? and bbg oa?
- Titles of art history with biblical iconography: bkl 20.27
- Titles of art history in Latin: bkl 2[01].? and spr lat
- Titles of art history with Dürer in the title: bkl 2[01].? and tit dürer*

- Titles of art history, the art guides are: bkl 2[01].? and aiw Kunstführer

- Titles of art history, which are exhibition catalogs, with biblical iconography, with Dürer in the title: bkl 2[01].? and aiw Ausstellungskatalog and bkl 20.27 and tit dürer*
