Biology
The SUB Göttingen has an extensive collection of biological literature. Various catalogues and databases are available for searching for books, journals and articles.
Catalogues
In the discovery system GöDiscovery you can find books, journals, databases and a large number of articles from journals - both from the holdings of the SUB Göttingen and the departmental libraries as well as from external sources. By default, the local holdings are searched; the search area can be expanded via the settings. In the Göttingen University Catalogue (GUK) you will only find the local holdings.
Books
Find books
Books can be found in the Göttingen University Catalog (GUK) or in GöDiscovery Printed books that are not available on site can often be ordered via interlibrary loan. E-books from the holdings of the SUB Göttingen that are not open access can also be used from outside the campus network via eduVPN.
Locations
Some biology books and journals are freely accessible in the reading room of the Central Library . You will find them sorted by subject in section W on the 2nd floor of the reading room. A large part is located in closed stacks and must be ordered via GöDiscovery or the Göttingen University Catalog (GUK).
Book not available?
If you need a book that is not available in Göttingen, you can send us a purchase suggestion. If you are a student at the University of Göttingen and need specialist literature for your term paper, thesis or other coursework that is currently on loan or not available, please use the book acquisition programme for students of Göttingen University.
Journals
Biological journals are mainly accessible as e-journals. You can find both the e-journals and the print editions of journals in GöDiscovery and in the Göttingen University Catalogue (GUK). You can find the biological e-journals also in the Electronic Journals Library (EZB).
Articles from journals with a green dot are available open access in full text. Access to the full text of articles from journals with a yellow dot is possible within the campus network of the Georg-August-Universität Göttingen, for members of the University of Göttingen via eduVPN also from outside the campus network.
Databases
Databases can be found in the Database Information System (DBIS), organized by subject. The licensed fee-based databases can also be found in GöDiscovery and in the Göttingen University Catalogue (GUK). The free databases can only be found in DBIS. Data resources of various types are listed, in particular subject bibliographies that list articles, as well as full-text databases that contain articles from electronic journals.
Selection of databases
- Web of Science
Platform for the parallel search for articles from journals and conference reports in various literature and citation databases. In addition, metrics about the journals and authors can be viewed. Web of Science is connected to the link resolver of the SUB Göttingen, which leads you directly from a displayed hit to the full text of the article, if it is accessible. - Birds of the World
Database with the taxonomy, descriptions and illustrations of bird species and bird families worldwide. - TAIR Arabidopsis Information Resource
Contains genetic and molecular biological data for the plant Arabidopsis Thaliana. - LIVIVO
Search portal of the German Central Library of Medicine (ZB MED) - Information Center for Life Sciences for the search for literature and research data in the life sciences (medicine and healthcare, nutritional, environmental and agricultural sciences). LIVIVO is connected to the link resolver of the SUB Göttingen, which leads you directly from a displayed hit to the full text of the article, if it is accessible.
Ornithological special library
The SUB Göttingen has housed the library of the Niedersächsische Ornithologische Vereinigung e. V. (NOV ) since 2004. It currently comprises around 2,500 volumes and 40 current journals, mostly on the subject of ornithology, but also includes general natural history literature. The library is located under "NOV" on the 2nd floor of the reading room of the Central Library at the end of the fifth wing of the building. As reference copies the books and journals cannot be borrowed. You can use them on site during opening hours.
Research-related services
Publishing
The SUB Göttingen supports you as a member of the University of Göttingen financially in publishing your research results in Open Access. GRO.publications serves as the open access repository of the University of Göttingen . This platform is also a management system for the administration and presentation of your publications.
Research data management
The Göttingen eResearch Alliance (eRA) supports you at the Göttingen Campus with services and advice in the area of research data management. Central services of the eRA are GRO.data, the repository for your research data, and GRO.plan, a tool for creating and managing data management plans.
Specialized link collection
BIOfid provides access to current and historical literature on biodiversity across regions.
Consortium in the National Research Data Infrastructure (NFDI). DataPLANT's goal is to establish sustainable research data management (RDM) by offering digital (e.g. in the form of software or teaching materials) and personal (e.g. through on-site consulting or workshops) support. DataPLANT is committed to developing an RDM system that meets the needs of the community and facilitates the processing and contextualisation of research data sets in accordance with the FAIR principles (Findable, Accessible, Interoperability).
The GFBio portal provides access to a portfolio of central services for the management and exchange of data and expertise in the life sciences, with the aim of providing researchers with services suitable for everyday use throughout the entire data lifecycle.
Consortium in the National Research Data Infrastructure (NFDI). NFDI4Biodiversity is dedicated to the collaborative use of biodiversity and environmental data. The aim is to develop prototypical solutions, from the implementation of suitable software components and the establishment of sustainable data archiving to the clarification of legal requirements for more open data and licensing models.
Consortium in the National Research Data Infrastructure (NFDI). The aim of NFDI4BIOIMAGE is to establish and further develop data management for biological image data and image analysis for researchers in Germany. Its objectives include the development of a cloud-compatible FAIR Digital Object standard for biological imaging, the further development of metadata standards and annotation tools, the linking of local storage solutions and suitable microscopy data repositories, the improved reproducibility of image analysis workflows, and the dissemination of best practices in the scientific community.
As part of the National Research Data Infrastructure (NFDI) NFDI4Microbiota supports the microbiological community by providing access to data, analysis services, data/metadata standards and training.
