Catalogues and Research Portals
GöDiscovery, our library's discovery system, lets you find books, journals, databases and a large number of journal articles. By default, only the local holdings are searched (SUB Göttingen including divisional and departmental libraries). The search scope can be extended to include additional data sources and the holdings of other libraries via the settings, which will also allow you to place inter-library loan requests.
The Göttingen University Catalogue (GUK) is the standard online catalogue of the SUB Göttingen which lets you search all locally available books and other media (excluding journal articles).
Academic literature which is freely accessible online can be found via BASE (Bielefeld Academic Search Engine) or Google Scholar. These research portals also contain the documents of the subject repository The Stacks (operated by the SUB Göttingen) which publishes English and American Studies publications in open access. When using Google Scholar, the SUB's link resolver provides direct access to licensed content, provided you are connected to the university network (e. g. via eduVPN).
PropylaeumSEARCH is the search portal of the Specialized Information Service for Classical Studies (Fachinformationsdienst Altertumswissenschaften). On the Propylaeum website you will also find additional discipline-specific search tips.
Books: Print and Electronic
Locations
Printed books on Classical Philology are housed in the Central Library and the Cultural Studies Divisional Library (BBK), books published before 1900 as well as prints and manuscripts are kept in the SUB's Historical Building. Books in the Central Library's reading rooms and in the BBK are accessible on open shelves and arranged according to discipline and subject.
You can order books and other media from the closed stacks for loan or consultation via the Göttingen University Catalogue (GUK) or via GöDiscovery.
Reading Room
In the reading room of the Central Library (1st floor) you will find reference works, dictionaries, introductions, editions of works by important authors, annotated editions and a wide selection of research literature. Due to the thematic arrangement, you can browse directly at the shelf.
You can display the entire reading room holdings on classical philology (approx. 4,000 volumes) via this query in the GUK.
E-Books
The SUB acquires individual e-books and e-book collections from various publishers. The individual titles are listed in the GUK and GöDiscovery. University members can also access e-books from home via eduVPN.
The individual e-books of some subject-relevant collections can also be displayed as separate lists in the GUK:
Purchase Suggestions
Books or articles that are not available at the SUB can be ordered via interlibrary loan (e.g. via GöDiscovery).
We are also happy to purchase the books or e-books you require - simply fill out the appropriate form for your purchase suggestion!
Journals
Classical philology journals are available both in print and, in many cases, digitally. You can find e- and print editions in GöDiscovery and in the Göttingen University Catalogue (GUK).
Printed: A selection of bound printed journals can be found in the reading room (ground floor and 1st floor under the notation HH). Current issues of other journals can be ordered at the information desk.
Digital: The Electronic Journals Library (EZB) offers an overview sorted by subject and uses color symbols to indicate access to the full text. University members can also access licensed titles (marked in yellow) from home via eduVPN.
Databases
Databases can be found in the Database Information System (DBIS), organized by subject. The licensed fee-based databases can also be found in GöDiscovery and in the Göttingen University Catalogue (GUK). The free databases can only be found in DBIS. DBIS lists data resources of various types such as subject bibliographies and full-text databases that contain articles from electronic journals, digitized historical sources or other primary texts.
