Romance Studies
You will find holdings on Romance Studies mainly in the Cultural Studies Divisional Library (BBK) and in the Central Library. On this page you will find further subject-specific information (services, literature research, etc.).
Catalogues
In the discovery system GöDiscovery you can find books, journals, databases and a large number of articles from journals - both from the holdings of the SUB Göttingen and the Departmental libraries as well as from external sources. By default, the local holdings are searched; the search area can be expanded via the settings.
In the Göttingen University Catalogue (GUK) you will only find the local holdings.
Publications: Print and digital
Printed books, e-books, articles, etc.
In GöDiscovery and GUK you will find various types of publications (e-books, printed books, exhibition catalogs) on Romance Languages. You can filter by publication type.
Arrangement
Some of the holdings are freely accessible in the reading room of the Central Library. However, a large part is located in closed stacks and can be ordered via GöDiscovery or the GUK. The literature in the reading room is arranged systematically in the classes "IH" to "IU" according to the Göttingen Online Classification (GOK).
Book not available?
If you cannot find a title, you can order the book via interlibrary loan or send us a Purchase suggestion for an e-book or a print title.
Databases and research data
Digital data is becoming increasingly common in humanities work. Here are some examples of data that are relevant to Romance studies:
- Dictionaries and lexicons
- Linguistic or literary corpora
- Bibliographies
- Data sets on biographical data
- Collections of images
- Responses to questionnaires
Database Information System (DBIS)
Databases can be found in the Database Information System (DBIS), organised by subject. The licensed fee-based databases can also be found in GöDiscovery and in the Göttingen University Catalogue (GUK). The free databases can only be found in DBIS. Data resources of various types are listed, in particular subject bibliographies that list articles, as well as full-text databases that contain articles from electronic journals. To provide an initial introduction, some particularly interesting options have been selected from the "TOP databases".
FID Romance Studies
The Specialized Information Service for Romance Studies collects and maintains various supra-regional offers for Romance Studies. Its cataloguecontains numerous databases and datasets that can be used as research data. This collection is significantly more extensive than that of DBIS. The FID offers a useful page for searching for research data with further links and documentation.
CLARIN Virtual Language Observatory
"The Virtual Language Observatory (VLO) facet browser was developed as part of CLARIN to explore the linguistic resources, services and tools available in CLARIN and related communities. Its goal is to provide an easy-to-use interface that enables a unified search and discovery process for a large number of resources from a variety of fields and providers."
Publication of research data
On the SUB website you will find various offers and services for the publication of research data. If you have any questions, please contact the subject librarian.
Complex literature search in the catalogue
In the Göttingen University Catalogue (GUK) you can use various options to find literature. One of the options is the annotation for the Göttingen Online Classification (GOK). In addition, you can combine several classes of the GOK to perform more precise searches. Here are some examples:
- Search for titles on French and Gender Studies: lsy il* and lsy "gs 000"
- Search for titles on Spanish and Digital Humanities: lsy ir* and lsy "g 000"
- Search for titles on Italian and art history: lsy in* and lsy g[ae]
Another option that is very interesting for Romance studies is the option to search by the language of the text. Here are some examples:
- Search for titles on Cervantes written in French: all Cervantes and spr fre
- Search for French language titles written in German: lsy il 3* and spr ger
Titles that have won certain literary prizes
The library offers a special feature for users of Romance studies: all titles since 1990 that have won a specific literary prize in Spain, Italy or France. The aim of these collections is to offer a complete selection of contemporary literature. On the one hand, users can understand this literature as a representative selection of fiction according to certain criteria from these countries. On the other hand, these complete collections can be used on campus for research purposes.
So far, the publications of the following literary prizes have been collected:
- Italian:
- Strega Prize
- Premio Urania
- Premio Attilio Micheluzzi
- French:
- Gouncort Prix
- Grand Prix de Littérature Policière
- Grand prix de la Critique
- Spanish:
- Premio nacional de narrativa

The following GOK classes were used for the subject indexing of these titles:
- IN 616: Italian - Author. Anonymous works - Text editions - Contemporary prose
- IL 616: French - Author. Anonymous works - Text editions - Contemporary prose
- IR 616: Spanish - Author. Anonymous works - Text editions - Contemporary prose
In the reading room of the SUB on the second floor you will find these shelfmarks and can be surprised which current Romance literature might be of interest to you.
If you would like to search more specifically, you can do so in the catalog. On the one hand, you can search for all titles that have won these prizes. You can do this with the special character ? and the search term "all". Examples:
- all "Won ? the Goncourt Prix"
- all "Won ? the Premio Nacional de Narrativa"
- all "Won ? the Premio Strega"
You can search more precisely for the prize and the year in which it was awarded, for example:
- all "Won the Goncourt Prix in 2008"
- all "Won the Premio Nacional de Narrativa in 1995"
- all "Won the Premio Strega in 2015"
If you have any suggestions as to which other prizes should be considered in a similar way, you can contact the subject librarian for Romance Studies.
