Library Traineeship

Shaping the future in the library and information sector: The traineeship at the SUB Göttingen prepares you for leadership and management positions in academic libraries.

Library traineeship

The library traineeship offers an access point into the library profession. As an academic librarian, you combine professional expertise with practical support for teaching and research, working closely with faculty, researchers, and students.

Your field of work is highly diverse, encompassing conceptual and organisational tasks, management responsibilities, and hands-on work with scholarly collections and digital services.

What is the Library Traineeship?

The library traineeship is a two-year, paid training programme that combines practical experience with academic studies. During the practical training, the trainee librarians rotate through all departments of the SUB Göttingen gaining hands-on experience in key areas of academic librarianship  – from collection development and digital services to project management, public relations, and strategic developments.

The theoretical training at Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin provides essential knowledge of national and international library systems, the organisation of information processes, legal issues, management practices and information technology.

Upon successful completion of the programme, trainee librarians acquire the “Laufbahnbefähigung für den höheren Bibliotheksdienst” as well as the internationally accredited Master’s degree in Information and Library Science (MALIS).

Why Göttingen?

The SUB Göttingen is one of the largest academic libraries in Germany. As a central institution of the Georg-August-Universität Göttingen – an internationally research university with comprehensive range of subjects – it is actively involved in research and teaching and develops innovative services to support scholarship and study.

Our trainees benefit from the diversity of our collections and the broad scope of library work. A particular focus is on Digital Humanities and research data management. As a partner of the eResearch Alliance (eRA), the SUB Göttingen supports researchers in applying digital methods and handling research data. The library is also involved in several consortia of the National Research Data Infrastructure (NFDI) – including NFDI4Biodiversity, NFDI4Culture and Text+.

Trainee librarians also gain in-depth insights into the strategic processes and management of the largest library in Lower Saxony. They take on independent responsibilities and develop individual areas of focus through project work, allowing us to actively support the development of an individual professional profile in academic librarianship.

Requirements and Application

In order to apply for the library traineeship, candidates must hold an academic degree (e. g., Erstes Staatsexamen, Diplom, Master’s, Magister, or equivalent).
